FAQ
Specific to conversion.
Is an International Driving Permit really mandatory?
Yes. Conversion without one doesn’t exist — this is the rule, not our policy. Without a valid permit the route is a new licence from scratch: six days, 10,000 ฿, no driving school.
I have a notarised translation — does that count?
No. A translation, notarised or not, is not an International Driving Permit and doesn’t open the conversion route. If that’s what you have, the from-scratch route is the one that works.
My IDP expired last month, what now?
Then conversion is closed and a new Thai licence is open. It takes six days, costs 10,000 ฿ for category A or 13,000 ฿ for category B, and the exam is taken on one Saturday.
My IDP covers cars but not motorbikes.
Then the car category converts for 5,500 ฿ and the motorcycle category is done from scratch at 10,000 ฿. The two can run in the same week.
Do I need to send you a photo of my licence?
The checker above gives you the answer without sending anything. If you’d like a human to confirm it, a photo of the categories page is enough, and it’s used only for that check.
How long is the Thai licence valid after conversion?
Two years, the same as any first Thai licence. A renewal to five years is available later with a work permit or a retirement visa.
Can I convert both categories at once?
Yes, if the permit covers both — 9,000 ฿ for the pair instead of 5,500 ฿ each. It stays one appointment.
