International Driving Permit in Thailand - do you actually need one?

An IDP is a booklet that translates your national license. It isn't a license in itself, and it has to be issued in your own country before you travel - you cannot get one in Thailand. It matters here for one reason: converting a foreign license into a Thai one needs a valid IDP covering the same categories. The exception is a Russian license, which converts without an IDP.

What it is and isn't

It travels with your license. It doesn't replace it.

An IDP does not replace your national license - you carry both.

It expires. It doesn't work as Thai identification, and it doesn't help with anything a Thai license is used for locally.

Why it matters for a Thai license

One document decides which route you take.

With a valid, matching IDP - or a Russian license

Conversion: 5,500-6,500 ฿, no exam, one appointment.

See how conversion works

Without one - or expired, or wrong category

A new Thai license from scratch: 10,000 ฿, no driving school, the fastest legal route on the island.

See how it works

This is not a downgrade. Most clients take the second route, including everyone with a non-Russian license whose IDP has expired.

Common problems

Where people get stuck.

Expired IDP

Cannot be renewed from Thailand. Conversion is off the table unless your license is Russian; otherwise from scratch is the route.

Category mismatch

A car-only IDP won't convert to a motorcycle license.

A notarised translation instead of an IDP

Not accepted. A Russian license needs neither for conversion.

Assuming an IDP is enough long-term

It expires, and it isn't Thai identification.

What else to know.

An IDP lets you drive legally in Thailand while it’s valid. A Thai license is what people get when they’re staying longer, when the IDP runs out, or when they want a local ID document.

If you'd rather not deal with it

We handle the full document set - this one included - for 1,500 ฿, as part of a driving license application. Doing it yourself costs about 600 ฿ in fees plus a trip to Immigration. The difference is your time.

FAQ

Specific questions.

Can I get an IDP in Thailand?

No. It has to be issued in your own country before you travel.

My IDP has expired - what are my options?

It cannot be renewed from Thailand. A Russian license still converts without it. Otherwise the route is a new Thai license from scratch: 10,000 ฿ for category A or 13,000 ฿ for category B, no driving school, the fastest legal route on the island.

Is a translation of my license the same thing?

No. A translation, notarised or not, is not an International Driving Permit and does not open the conversion route. A Russian license converts without either.

Do I need both my national license and the IDP?

For most licenses, yes: an IDP alone is not enough, and a national license alone is not enough. A Russian license is the exception and converts on its own.

Which countries' IDPs are accepted?

Any country that issues International Driving Permits under the relevant conventions. There is no separate approved list beyond that.

How long is a Thai license valid after conversion?

Two years, the same as any first Thai license. A renewal to five years is available later with a work permit or a retirement visa.
