Buying a Thai license: why it doesn’t work and what to do instead
You can’t buy a real Thai license: only the DLT issues licenses, after a personal visit, tests and a document check. Ads for a “license in a day, no exams” sell either a forgery or nothing. There is a legal one-visit option, though - converting a home license. Russian license holders don’t even need an IDP for it.

What these offers look like
The legal portal Siam Legal describes the scheme like this: scammers find foreigners on social media and messengers, often message first and promise to help with a "government" license. They take the money and hand over a forged document, or nothing at all.
According to ExpatDen, in 2026 such accounts offered to sit the exam for the applicant for 2,500-5,000 ฿ and only talked over Messenger. When foreigners suggested checking the arrangement at a police station, the accounts disappeared. The DLT, by the same account, warned that these middlemen invent extra payments and never deliver a real license.
What a forged license leads to
A forged license isn't a fine for driving without one but a criminal offence. Forgery and use of a forged document are covered by sections 264-268 of the Thai Criminal Code, and the penalty can include prison. For a foreigner a criminal case also puts the visa at risk.
It is easy for the police to check a license: it is issued as a plastic card, and the driver's record is in the DLT database. A forged IDP gives itself away at a checkpoint too, because it is shown with the home license and the categories on both must match.
Insurance is a separate risk. After an accident the insurer checks the rider's documents, and to them a forged license is the same as none.
Telling legal help from a scam
Legal agents exist: according to ExpatDen, they book the DLT Smart Queue slot and handle the paperwork through the office. A few signs tell them from scammers.
- The applicant goes to the DLT in person and takes the tests themselves.
- The price is fixed in advance and doesn't grow along the way.
- DLT fees are paid against an official receipt.
- Nobody promises a license "without attending" or "without exams" to someone who has to take one.
- The finished license is handed over at the DLT office, not sent by courier.

A Thai license in one day: when it's real
The only legal way to get a license in one visit is conversion. For that you need your home license and a valid IDP with matching categories; for a Russian license, just the license itself, no IDP. In that case there is no exam.
The documents for conversion take a day if the landlord has already filed the TM-30: a residence certificate at immigration, a medical certificate at a clinic, photos.
